The Royal Regiment of Canada is a Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve Infantry unit based out of Fort York Armoury in Toronto, Ontario.


Members of the unit conduct training at Fort York Armoury on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 10:30pm, and participate in field training exercises at Reserve Training Areas, Training Centres, and Canadian Forces Bases throughout Ontario one weekend a month. Full-Time Unit Cadre (FTUC) personnel are employed on a full-time basis during regular business hours to
conduct administration, plan training, procure transportation and equipment, and ensure the continued successful operation of the unit.


Members of The Royal Regiment of Canada have and continue to deploy on domestic operations throughout Canada, as well as on expeditionary operations throughout the globe.

What is an infantry soldier?

Infantry soldiers are the Canadian Army’s primary combat fighters, and are responsible for closing with and engaging the enemy, by day or by night, regardless of weather, season, or terrain.

 

The primary responsibilities of an infantry soldier include, but are not limited to:

  • Expertly operate and maintain a wide range of weapons, including rifles, machine guns, anti-armour weapons, and various other weapon systems

  • Use sophisticated equipment for communications, navigation, night observation, and surveillance

  • Operate with support elements, including land vehicles, boats, aircraft, and other combat arms trades

  • Employ tactics in camouflage and concealment, patrolling, offensive operations, defensive operations, and security

  • Respond to domestic operations for natural disasters, such as floods, forest fires, and severe storms

  • Deploy on expeditionary operations in combat, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, and training coalition forces

Grenadier Company

Grenadier Company, named after The Royal Grenadiers, is The Royal Regiment of Canada’s main subunit. The company consists of qualified infantry soldiers who continuously train to maintain their war fighting skills. Once in the company, members have the opportunity to take part in more advanced training, including driving, hand-to-hand combat, heavy weapons, and radio communications, as well as as volunteer for domestic and expeditionary operations.

toronto Company

Toronto Company, named after The Toronto Regiment, is The Royal Regiment of Canada's training subunit. The company provides training that prepares soldiers for the courses they will complete at various training establishments. The company includes new recruits preparing for Basic Military Qualification (BMQ), and Development Period 1 Basic Infantry Qualification (DP1 BIQ) courses, as well as leadership candidates who are preparing for Primary Leadership Qualification (PLQ) course. Soon after a recruit has completed DP1 BIQ, they join Grenadier Company.

58th Company

58th Company, named after The 58th Battalion (Canadian Expeditionary Force), is The Royal Regiment of Canada’s logistics, service, and support subunit. The company conducts administration, plans training, procures transportation and equipment, and ensures the continued successful operation of the unit.

Regimental Band

The Band of The Royal Regiment of Canada is the unit's musical subunit. The Regiment is one of the few units in the Canadian Armed Forces to have an official musical subunit. The Band consists of military musicians, and associate members. Associate members are civilian volunteers, many of whom are former military musicians. The Band provides musical support to the unit during ceremonial events, and performs across Ontario throughout the year.

Working in the Reserves

  • We parade (conduct training) every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM 

  • We conduct field training exercises one weekend a month from Friday evenings to Sunday afternoons

  • After completing DP1, members may speak to their Chain of Command to seek further opportunities for employment on a part-time and full-time contract basis
