regimental association

The Association

The Regimental Association of The Royal Regiment of Canada initially originated during World War II (WW2) as an organization to support members of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Canada, as they arrived home from war. The soldiers informally met to maintain friendships and keep up-to-date on those still deployed. Eventually, a permanent Executive was formed and regular meetings were held in various veterans’ clubs throughout Toronto. When the Regiment moved to its current location at Fort York Armoury, the Regimental Association began to regularly host its meetings in the Sergeants’ Mess. A President and other officers were elected, and objectives were formally established. This included supporting the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Canada (Reserve), and preserving the records and memoirs of the Regiment, and its perpetuated units. The Regimental Association would raise funds in order to make donations, purchase gifts, and support other regimental activities. On 7 May 1952, the Regimental Association of The Royal Regiment of Canada was officially incorporated by the Province of Ontario.

Membership initially consisted of only active soldiers and veterans of the Regiment. Today, the Regimental Association also includes spouses, children, extended family members, veterans of other units, and former members who continue to serve elsewhere in the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Regimental Association continues to meet in the Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess on the first Thursday of each month, from September to June. Business is discussed, activities are planned, and socials are had. Retired members of the Regimental Association have gradually assumed responsibility for many activities once performed by active serving members, including fundraising, organizing veteran hospital visits, writing newsletters, hosting formal dinners, and representing the regiment at war memorials.
